Convert Cost Basis

Change how cost basis information is tracked for open-end mutual funds. Fidelity's default cost basis option for open-end mutual funds is the Average Cost (ACSC) method. However, to use one of the supported cost basis disposal methods, you must first convert the cost basis method from ACSC to ID Cost. You may request this conversion at either the account level or position level within an account; the new cost basis method takes effect the next day.

Note
Fidelity accommodates requests to convert cost basis methods from the ACSC method to the ID Cost method. Fidelity cannot accommodate requests to convert back to the ACSC after the position has already been converted to ID Cost.

View Unknown Cost Basis

View lots (open or closed) for which cost basis is unknown when the account holds at least one position with unknown cost.

On the Account Cartridge, select the Account Number tab and select Unknown Cost. (Field Definitions)

Update Cost Basis

An account may have a position for which cost is unknown. This usually occurs because the securities were acquired and transferred in from another institution. At some point, the customer or third party, such as an estate executor, may advise you of the original or adjusted cost of the security and you can add that information to the position record.

Changes entered on the current day will not be available for viewing until the next business day. The Update Pending column indicates whether current day updates are pending for the shares. If you decide to proceed with your update, a message explains that the information you enter will override pending information already entered.

  1. In the Security ID column for an eligible position, select the link.

  2. Select Update Cost.

Eligible lots list in order by Date Acquired. (Field Definitions)

  3. Next to the lot to update, select Edit.
  4. In the Date Acquired field, enter the date the shares were added to the account, in MM/DD/YYYY format.
  5. In the Quantity field, enter the number of shares to assign cost information.
  6. In the Cost field, enter the total original amount paid for the shares, and press Tab.

The calculated value of one share of the security displays in the Cost/Share column based on the Cost/Quantity entered. This value always displays as positive regardless of short/long position.

  7. Select the source of the cost information:

    Third Party
    Customer Provided
    (Default)

  8. To continue accounting for shares in the original quantity, select Add Row.

    - Add up to 197 lots to the original quantity.
    - To delete a row, next to the row, select Delete Row.

Updates to an ACSC position are not complete until you have accounted for all shares in the original lot quantity. For example, if the original lot quantity is 500, you cannot enter cost for only 250 shares and leave the remaining 250 unknown. This is not true, however, for an ID Cost position.

  9. Select Verify.

If cost method is ID Cost and the lot has not been fully allocated, a message prompts you to confirm whether you want to continue. Select OK.
    or
If cost method is Average Cost and lot has not been fully allocated, a message prevents you from continuing. Select OK to finish allocating the original lot quantity.

  10. Select Submit.

View your updates on the next business day.

ISIN If account is enabled for International
The International Securities Identifying Number (ISIN), which is an international code that identifies a specific securities issue. All internationally traded securities issuers are urged to use this numbering scheme, which is now the accepted standard by virtually all countries. An ISIN identifies a security but not an exchange on which it trades.
Maturity Date

The earliest effective date available on which the security matures; the principal is redeemed along with any remaining interest payments. For insurance and annuities, displays the date the contract matures, as provided by a third party. If an event is affecting the Maturity Date, an indicator represents the type of Maturity Date that displays. When no indicator displays, the date is the original Maturity Date.

F (Fully Called)
The issuer redeemed all outstanding bonds earlier than the Maturity Date. On the call date, the principal is returned to the holder based on the call price.
M (Mandatory Put)
With a put option, the bond holder has the right to sell (or put back) all or a portion of the bonds to the issuer at a specific price for a certain period. With a mandatory put, the issuer requires the bond holder to sell the bonds back at a specified price on a specific date.
P (Pre-Refunded Bonds)
A municipal bond is secured by an escrow fund. The escrow fund comes from the issuer floating a second bond issue and using proceeds from that second bond issue to purchase government obligations, typically treasuries. Proceeds from the second bond issue create an escrow fund to mature at the first call date of the first bond issue to pre-refund that issue. Bond issuers typically do this during times of lower interest rates to lower their interest costs.

Note
If an event affects the Maturity Date and the date is not currently available, the appropriate indicator displays along with the † symbol (e.g., -- (F)†).

Money Source For Fidelity 403(b)/401(k) and CGF Donor-Advised Fund accounts

Pool ID For CGF Donor-Advised Fund accounts
The numerical identifier for the charitable gift pool.
Recent Market Value

The market value of the position as calculated using the recent price and the updated position quantity (after selecting the Refresh icon): Recent Quantity x Recent Price. Factored positions calculate this value as follows: Recent Quantity x Factor x Recent Price ÷ 100. This column is totaled at the bottom of the list; if grouped, each sub-section displays a total for this field.

Recent Price

The last trade price for the security. For accounts with international positions, the Foreign Recent Price column displays this value in the foreign trading currency.

Use of Closing Price

If this trade price reflects the closing price of the previous business day (domestic) or previous session (international), a Closing Price footnote displays in the field.

  • Applies to mutual fund positions priced using closing prices from the previous day until a mutual fund's price updates, which is usually after 6:00 PM Eastern time. This is not the case for mutual funds and money markets that are priced throughout the day.
  • Applies to fixed income positions since these positions use closing prices from the previous day to price holdings.
  • Applies if security is illiquid and the closing price of the previous day or past previous days is the most recent price available.
  • Applies pre-market when Recent Price is populated with the closing price from the previous day because the security has not traded.
  • Does not apply to cash and currency positions.
  • Does not apply to annuities and alternative investments since these are priced by a third party.
  • Does not apply when the price reflects the current day's session, or the position is actively trading.
  • Does not apply after market close since the reflected price is not the closing price from the previous day.

Note
Both Closing Price and Closing Market Value are applicable values for CDs. Intraday pricing is not applicable for CDs; therefore, Recent Price and Recent Market Value reflect closing values.

Recent Quantity The number of shares of the security based on intraday account activity. A negative value indicates a short position, or an option position held in a margin account type. A 0.00 value indicates the position was fully sold.
